Be Forewarned...

Something very baaad is going to happen to one of my drawn sheep. Sometimes I just have to exorcise these naughty nasty thoughts by drawing them. And since this is my blog I will post them.

Alligator vs Deer

It seems recently that I have been taking interest in drawing alligators. Having spent my entire life in the Bay Area (for the most part) I really enjoy the flora in the environments that alligators live. Lots of swamps and spanish moss, bugs and creepy housing. It's just so refreshing compared to the static buildings I am surrounded by constantly in this gray city. On further review these are things that I like to look at a draw, but probably wouldn't want to live with.

Preliminary sketch.

And the finish. I am attempting to hone my drawing skills, and really am just craving some good old OCD ridden ink work. The surface of the water is something I should work on...

Sketchbook: Ewww... Creepy.

Don't ask me why but the other day I was combing through the sexual offenders that are registered in San Francisco and I found the above drawn man - the building manager for my studio space. !!!

Bus Fight!!

Whoa.. I was on my way home from the lecture at CCA on Weds night and ended up on the bottom of a drunken-ghetto fight on the 22. I was drawing my fellow passengers, as usual. A very drunk kid and his friends (not as drunk) got on at 16th and mission, and proceeded to harass people by spitting on them and pulling there hair! And then, of course, he starts talkin' shit to this other kid on the bus. This kid drops his books and threw down with the drunk one. Everyone was smart enough to flee the area, except me. I'm not too great with the reflexes and I can be extremely lazy. I wasn't gonna move for these two punks, I had waited for that bus for the last 45 minutes in the cold 11 p.m. SF weather and I was pissed and wanted to go home. So they started fighting in the set of seats directly across the aisle from mine. The direction of their momentum changes, and they land in my set of seats. On top of me, swinging at each other. At that point I started yelling at them, and my arm with my trusty pen was caught between them. Pen cap goes flying and I really hoped that I wouldn't stab one of them in the eye. Some very brave little hipster girl came to my rescue, pulling them off. They immediately exited the bus and everyone expressed their concern for me. I was only concerned with finding that damn pen cap and getting home. I have a nasty bruise on my left leg (not sure how that happened) but no other sign of injury. Yay for bus fistfights!

remotivation

I have been busy worrying about everything and nothing, too busy to keep up with this blog I created for myself. This posting just contains drawings from my sketchbook, which I plan on posting more often. Part of the reason why I think I am reluctant to update this often is because it isn't as intimate as a sketchbook, so I am going to dismantle the comments portion of this blog in the hopes of making it more inviting for myself to post on. I want to post my daily sketches, as well as process sketches/drawings/finishes and ideas I have. I have definitely been feeling a little cray-cray lately, not expressing myself the ways I know I should, which is with pen and paper. So here it goes...

Here are a few sketches of peops I encountered on Muni this morning. Kid couldn't keep his finger out of his nose.

This sketch is for a piece I am working on right now, and it is representative of a different style than I complete work in.

And this last one is a sketch for a series I might do. I found this neat link when I was looking up reference of conjoined twins and thought I would do something similar, but it instead for singles. These are just a few ideas I've had so far. Black blob is my cat.

wow, i never work this fast!

the question is should i do the toxic olympic symbol or not? i just don't know if it reads well without it. the saturation is poor in the second, bad lighting...

olympic pollution process

hey, haven't posted here in a while. the current project for the illustrobots group is an illustration commenting on the air quality problems in beijing during the olympics. it's a great assignment, and i think we're going to have a record setting turn out for the group! i'm going to attempt to show process a bit, but this is going to be a little unconventional for me since i really don't feel like painting this one. part of the assignment is to use limited palette; black, white, and one other color. it's just too tempting to leave this to drawing and line work! but here's where i'm at so far, the initial sketch, and then where i'm at right now with the finish...

i've been busy workin on the finish of the bug promo!

and now the end is in sight! thought i would update this lame blog and post pics of the promo book, which is almost ready to send out! i don't know why i always do this shit by hand - next one i swear i will have professionally done! it's getting to be a bit of a waste of time and energy... i made 'em accordion style, but have a sticker at the bottom to hold it together, which can easily be removed to see all of the work. hope art director's take the time to look at this, let alone remove the sticker!

Who killed Hugh .. Finish

Hey - it's been a while since I posted on this, and i have a few updates!  First is the Hugh Killer Flop.  I was experimenting with something new, and it didn't quite work out for me.  I also finished another one for the bug book (not happy with it).  Just one more to go and then I have to go through and write text, and fix the girl and the iguana so they look more consistent throughout the book.  Here's also a new sketch for my assignment for Illustrobots - to do a sake ad.  I have big fish in mine, and no people, very strange.  I just got back from NY ICON5, and that is why I haven't posted in a while.  Just super busy....

hugh killer...

this deadline was extended for a week, so a procrastinated of course...  here is the almost finished drawing - i'm probably going to take this one further as a drawing and do less color.  i also changed the composition a bit, put all of the figures in the back rather than having the one kneeling closer as well.

who killed hugh?

This is the newest assignment for Illustrobots - we could choose to do a cover for either a sci/fi, fantasy, romance or crime noir book.  We pretty much had complete freedom on what we wanted to draw, which always proves to be difficult for me.  I prefer direction, it's why I chose this field!  Anyways, I just thought about what I wanted to draw, and that happened to be playboy bunnies.  Soooo I came up with a kind of crime noir related murder mystery.  One of the playmates has killed Hugh, but which on and what was the motive??? This is the sketch, pretty much the worst drawing I think I've get posted, still playing with the size of the figures in the composition.  In the finish I think I will have the girl closest to us have her head down, maybe just see kind of a sinister smile on her face or something like that - I want them to be anonymous.

A Real Doll - finish

I don't really know if I care for this one; it was met with great disappointment by the Illustrobots crew (all 3 + me) that showed up for the crit.  They apparently really, REALLY, wanted to see the Ken's bump wallpaper, so if I have time this week I might amend it.  Time to get to work on the finish of the spider...

deianira finish..

ready or not - this is it.. but should i pick the dark or the light one.  cheating with lighting..

still not done with deianira...

mrhhhh... still lookin' like crap to me.  have to make rocky stuff cooler, finish hand, and whatever else it takes to make this acceptable.

Tuesday, May 20, 2008

and another one! deianira...

k - one more for now.  here is the last project that assigned for ILLUSTROBOTS, a la Tim.  I'm not quite done with it yet, but i don't think i'll admit that to them, hah!  Close though - but here's a sneak peak with ink preliminary work included. Check out her story here

lil girl, bugs, and green iguana...

hi.  this is my first post.  not quite sure what i think of this yet. these pictures are of some of my work for a kids-booky promo-project.  whether it's actually appropriate for kids books is questionable.  this promo-book is a total of five pages, these are the first two finishes with a final drawing thrown in as well.  i just paint over my final drawing. next up is spiders (which, psychologically, is the most difficult so far).
